Summary
I’m creating a series of short posts on PeopleSoft Insights.
It would be nice to know where we’re going, how to get there, and we need some common language.
A Start
I’ve had a few recent experiences with clients and colleagues surrounding PeopleSoft insights that left me wanting something to help move the project forward.
For the clients, it was a Babel of terms about PeopleSoft and Insights objects. We wasted so much time just trying to understand each other’s references.
In another conversation, I had to bring my friend Mike up to speed on creating Insights Dashboards like… Now!
Mike is a great, experienced developer with no Insights/Kibana/OpenSearch background. Time for Mike to drink from the Firehose. Mike did great, as most old and crusty PeopleSoft developers have the tendency to land the impossible by the deadline. But it was totally unfair to put him in that situation.
We need …something more.
Other Insights Training
It’s not a desert out there. Others have put together blogs and videos about creating Insights dashboards. Here’s a link to a bunch of links about Kibana/Insights training.
Sasank from PeopleSoft, Siva from the PeopleSoft Channel and Gary from SpearMC have put together some good posts and videos.
Learn where it works best for you.
A series of short posts
For Mike and all my friends like Mike, my plan is to create a series of short posts and videos about creating Insights Dashboards. Each post will cover just one idea or concept. My plan is that someone can just go where they need a quick intro or refresher. Going through them all in order should enable you to deliver Insights Dashboards to your customer.
Here’s my plan. BTW, plans can change.
- Insights Terms
- Data and Query
- Search Objects
- Extract data to Insights
- Index Patterns
- Importing and Exporting Insights Objects
- Create a Pie
- Create a Bar Chart
- Create a Metric
- Create a Control
- Create a Data Table
- Create Dashboards
- Import Dashboards
- Dashboard Roles
- Configure Dashboards
- Dashboard Tiles
- Insights Data Security
- Preprocessing App Engine Libraries
- Changes to data structures
- Deleting Data
- Filtering with PeopleCode
- Real Time Indexing
All the posts will be about a single dashboard example. This one example will be taken through a simple start to the end. First, we’ll get through the process as an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). Later posts will add complexity and detail such as preprocessing and security.
Timeframe
So, what’s the timeframe for all of this? Maybe you’re finding this post sometime in the future and it’s all done: just follow the links. Learn. Do something great with PeopleSoft.
Otherwise, I’ll publish as I have the opportunity and time. Unfortunately, I have higher priorities that demand my time and attention. I’m a working PeopleSoft developer with a mortgage and a daughter on a Travel Softball team.
Some Assumptions and Ground Rules
- I’m going to spend less time on bloviating monologs and video production value and more time just publishing and going on to the next topic. There will be warts.
- You have access to a PeopleSoft environment with working OpenSearch and Insights
- You understand PeopleTools – this is not an introduction to PeopleTools course
- This will not make you a top Kibana/Insights developer in other arenas. This is focused on PeopleSoft’s implementation of Insights
- I’m using a PeopleTools 8.61 Insights environment – it’s what I have access to
- This is not about Global Search/OpenSearch outside of powering Insights dashboards
See you out on the blogs.
