BI Publisher TBAddin64 Error work around

TBAddin64 Error

One of the recent Microsoft Office 365 updates broke the BI Publisher Desktop Add-In for Word and Excel.  Until this issue is fixed, many of us are not able to support existing or create new BI Publisher RTF report templates.

Here is the problem

A dialog box appears when launching Word

TBAddin64 Error

Clicking “Yes” or “No” does open Word, but BI Publisher is missing from the ribbon menu.

This posting will walk you through a workaround that hopefully will get you working enough to support your ongoing production until Oracle provides us with permanent solution.

Meanwhile, at Oracle…

Oracle has created Bug 37054304 (MICROSOFT WORD BI PUBLISHER ADD-IN THROWING TBADDIN64 ERROR).  As of this writing, the issue is in status 40 – Waiting for the base bug fix.   I’m hoping that this means that someone at Oracle is diligently coding a fix for our desktop.

Along comes a White Knight

Someone in the Oracle Support Communities posted a work around to the issue.  User_86LUC posted instructions in a spreadsheet walking through updating registry entries to get the BI Publisher Addin working.

Whoever worked through the issue and posted with workaround: Thank You.

The fix:  Create a new registry key informing word where it can find the TBAddin add in.

Open the Registry Editor

One of these paths will have the TBAddin64 Key

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\TBAddin64

or

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Word\Addins\TBAddin64

Copy down each of the values and types along with their values.  It’s easiest to put them in a spreadsheet.  You will need these properties and values in a few steps.

In the Registry Editor, Navigate to a new location

\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Word\AddinsData

If the folder (key) “TBAddin64” does not exist under the AddinsData folder, add it by right clicking on the AddinsData folder > New > Key.  Name the key “TBAddin64”.

If it does exist, click on that key.

In the right window, add the properties you just copied down from the earlier step.  These are all string values other than the one “REG_DWORD” value.

Launch Word.

If you get the “tbaddin64” error again, select “No”.

Come back to the registry and refresh the key values (F5)

If you see a “LoadCount” Property, delete the entire property (right-click).

Relaunch Word and you shouldn’t get the error.

Reactivate the Bi Publisher Add in.

If you do not see BI Publisher on the Ribbon Menu, Reactivate it through Word’s Options.

File > Options > Add Ins

Click the “Go” button at the bottom with “Com Add-Ins” selected in the drop-down menu.

Check the box next to BI Pub entry, and then OK.

You should see the “BI Publisher” option on the Ribbon Menu.

Did you Disable the Add-In?

In the case you clicked on “Yes” to disable the TBAddin64 on the warning dialog box, you may also have to reenable the plugin.

Same way as the reactivating the plugin, but choose “Disabled Items” from the dropdown box, and then re-enable the add-in.

Will you have to do this every time?

You shouldn’t have to add keys to the registry editor again.

However, you may have to reactivate the add-in in MSWord when you need to work on a BI Publisher Document.
