August 19, 1996…
… my first day of my first PeopleTools class.
I wasn’t sure where this was going or how long I was going be doing this “PeopleSoft” stuff. I just knew that the PeopleSoft consultants were havI got a lot more fun and making a lot more money than I did as a tech support weenie.
I was working for The Hunter Group. My desk was right outside of Terry Hunter’s office. I was trying to figure out how to transition over to consulting without actually knowing much about PeopleSoft.
I was in luck. The Hunter Group was looking for more consultants for the Y2K ramp up and I made coffee. Yeah, I made the coffee. There was three of us that arrived at work early every morning: The COO, the CFO and me. The CFO didn’t make coffee. The COO and I took turns making the next pot. The CFO drank coffee, but he didn’t believe in making the coffee.
So Hunter needed consultants and they knew three things about me: I was pretty good at tech support, I was in early every morning and I made coffee.
Somewhere in there I think I made the best pot of coffee of my entire life… at least just once. Because not too long after that pot, I was sitting in PeopleSoft’s campus in Pleasanton with my first training Certificate.
I hope I can make another pot of coffee like that again someday.
