PeopleSoft Insights Training

My plan is to create a series of short posts and videos about creating Insights Dashboards.  Each post will cover just one idea or concept:  something that someone can just go where they need a quick intro or refresher.  Going through them all in order should enable you to deliver Insights Dashboards to your customer.

I’m creating a series of short posts on PeopleSoft Insights.

It would be nice to know where we’re going, how to get there, and we need some common language.

Insights Training 01 Terms

Your team needs common, concise terms when designing Insights Dashboards. Calling everything a “widget” creates misunderstandings and slows progress.
This post is a dictionary and reference of proper terms when working with PeopleSoft Insights Dashboards

Insights 02: Data and PSQuery

How to create a PSQuery to Extract Insights Data.

Insights Training 03: Search Objects

PeopleSoft Search Objects: Define and control datasets in OpenSearch

Insights 04: Extract Data to Insights

Scheduling Search Indexes moves our data from PeopleSoft to OpenSearch. Once OpenSearch has ingested that data, we can then use it in our Visualizations.

In PeopleSoft Insights, an Index Pattern tells OpenSearch Dashboards which data indexes you want to work with. It’s also where you can format how data fields are displayed, and create scripted fields for calculated values

Build Insights 06 - Migrate Insights Objects

Use Insight’s Saved Objects utility to migrate and backup your Insights objects.

Insights 07: Metric Visualizations

Build Insights Metric Visualizations: Put a Number Tile on your dashboard!
Metrics show a quick Count, Sum, average or other simple KPI data.

After we have created Insights visualizations, the next step is to create a dashboard using those visualizations.
I’ll demonstrate creating two simple dashboards

Build Insights 9 Import, Secure & Configure

Build Insights 9: Creating a dashboard in Insights is not the end of our journey. In this post we will Import, Secure and Configure our dashboards in PeopleSoft

Build Insights 10: Deploy and Present

After importing an Insights
Dashboard, we have two steps left before we are done: Deploy and Deliver.

Insights 11: Real Time Indexing

For many, Real Time Indexing is the Holy Grail of PeopleSoft Insights Analytics.
Find out what is happening Now.
Not tomorrow or later today after a refresh.
But Right Now!

Build Insights 12: Pie Chart

Pie charts compare values to show portions of a total amount.
Generally, percentages of a whole.
Join me for a quick introduction walkthrough of PeopleSoft Insights Pie Visualizations.

Insights 13: Bar Charts

Bar Charts compare data or show changes over time.
Create Horizontal & Vertical Bars, Area & Line Charts all within this one Visualization

Insights Save Error

If you spend any time building PeopleSoft Insights Visualizations, you will get a “Error on Saving” eventually

Let’s fix it!

Data Tables show data in rows and columns and can contain links to drill into exact PeopleSoft transactions.
This is a quick walk-through of PeopleSoft data table basics

Insights 16: Update an Existing Dashboard

Let’s update an existing Insights dashboard by adding new visualizations and removing those we no longer need.

Insights 17: Create a Control (Filters)

TBD

Create Controls and filters

Deleting and recreating your Insights Index Patterns removes all formatting and formulas. There also is a good chance to break all your visualizations using that Index Pattern.
Instead, refresh your Insights Index Patterns

Insights 19: Data Security

TBD

Row level security for Insights Dashboard Data

Insights 20: Preprocessing App Engine Libraries

TBD

Gathering dashboard data may be more complex than what’s possible with a PSQuery. We can define an App Engine Library to run prior to our data extraction to prepare our data

Insights 21: Deleting Data

Some data can get stale.

Selectively remove data from our OpenSearch index and our Insights Dashboard

Insights 22: Filtering with PeopleCode

Apply Filters to your Insights Dashboard from your PeopleSoft component.

For most posts and videos, the training is cumulative: they build off the previous posts.

For example, #3 Search Objects uses the PSQuery created in #2 Data and Query.
