BI Publisher TBAddin64 Error Fix

Fixed tbaddin64

A Fix?

BI Publisher Desktop appears to be now fixed!

Bi Publisher Desktop broke with the August 2024 Microsoft 365 Update (2406).   Starting up MS Word would show a dialog box stating tbaddin64 was having problems.

I documented and demonstrated a workaround that user User_86LUC from the Oracle community was able to find in my post “BI Publisher TBAddin64 Error work around”.

This fix worked… sometimes.   Even with my own machine, some days I could get the desktop running and somedays I could not.

Meanwhile, at Oracle…

Oracle has created Bug 37054304 (MICROSOFT WORD BI PUBLISHER ADD-IN THROWING TBADDIN64 ERROR).  The community chimed in, and we watched… and waited.

The Problem?

Well, the problem was Microsoft 365 Update 2406 released in August, 2024.   Whatever happened in the update, Word could not launch the tbadding64 add in without crashing.

The fix

The fix now is to install the latest Microsoft 365 update.   As of this writing, that’s update 2408.

In Word, navigate to File > Account.   Look for the large button in the upper right of the window

Choose the “Update Now”, or whatever is best for you.

… and something else

After installing the update, I was still having some issues with the tbaddin64 error.

The “additional” part of the fix:

  1. Uninstall the BI Publisher Desktop from your Windows machine.  You do this the “Add and Remove Programs” option in the control panel.
  2. Remove all references to tbaddin64 in the registry
  3. Reboot
  4. Download and install the latest version of BI Publisher Desktop from either your PeopleSoft application or from Oracle.

After reinstalling the latest Bi Publisher Desktop, everything worked fine on my computer.  Word opened without any warnings or errors.  The BI Publisher menu option was in the ribbon.
